Stop Focusing on those Big Bold Goals

Stop Focusing on those Big Bold Goals

Does that sound contrary to everything you've ever heard about goals?

Granted, there's value in having a big scary goal like becoming a pro, setting a record, or winning a championship. A big goal may help you get out of bed when you don't want to, or keep you motivated through the daily grind.

However, too much focus on our big goals can create anxiety, especially on the days leading up to a competition. Or, you may experience disappointment if you feel like you're not getting there fast enough.

In fact, experts say we should only focus on our big goals 5% of the time. This might have you asking, "what in the heck do I focus on the other 95% of the time?"

Great question!

The majority of the time we want to be focused on our process goals. What are process goals? They're the daily steps that you need to take to improve. They'll look different whether it's a day for practice or a day to perform. Here are some examples:

🏆 Rather than focusing on a personal record she was close to achieving, a lacrosse player remained fixed on her process goals: watch her hips, use my feet.

🏆 In preparation for my high call run at the World Series of Team Roping Finale, I focused on my game-day process goals: 'see the start, be aggressive,' rather than thinking about the outcome.

🏆 On a practice day, another competitor had just one process goal, 'see the target.' After a couple of practices, she saw improvement, and moved on to a new goal.

So, while setting big, audacious goals can certainly fuel our ambitions and drive us forward, it's the process goals that truly pave the way to success. By dedicating 95% of our focus to these daily, actionable steps, we not only reduce anxiety and prevent burnout but also build a solid foundation for achieving our larger aspirations. Each small step, whether it's refining a technique or mastering a skill, contributes to our overall growth and progress. Remember, it's the consistent, focused effort on the process that ultimately leads to the realization of our grandest dreams. So, embrace the journey, celebrate the small victories, and let your process goals guide you to greatness.
